Stratis Health and the Minnesota Department of Human Services sponsored the 2022 SOAR Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) Treatment Boot Camp to support health care teams responding to the opioid public health emergency. This includes bridging care gaps in disadvantaged, rural, and underserved populations, as part of the Stratis Health Opioid Addiction in Rural (SOAR) Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) online learning series.
This year, the boot camp was held in person, focusing on the neurobiology of addiction and engaging leadership and your community to address stigma and improve the equity of managing opioid use disorder. Due to limited event space in Minnesota, we are grateful to our North Dakota neighbors for providing a venue for us to do this important work.
Participants:
Physicians, nurses, hospital leadership, community opioid use disorder task force and coalition members, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, care coordinators/navigators, and social workers.
Participants in this boot camp learned how to:
- Discuss the history of the opioid epidemic and where we are now, including the intersection with other substances.
- Improve recognition of opioid use disorder.
- Understand the basic neurobiology of addiction and what makes it a chronic health condition.
- Describe the different MOUD treatments, why they are the standard of care, and how they are initiated and managed.
- Define the intersection of chronic pain and opioid use disorder.
- Engage clinical leadership, hospital leadership, and community stakeholders.
Presenters
Heather Bell, MD, Kurt DeVine, MD, Family and Addiction Medicine
Drs. Bell and DeVine began their careers as rural primary care physicians. With the surge in opioid prescribing and the mounting opioid epidemic, in 2015 they started an opioid stewardship program through the Minnesota Department of Health that led to pilot programs in 12 Minnesota communities focused on appropriate opioid prescribing and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatment and technical assistance. After notable success in their local programs, the MN Department of Human Services provided funding for Bell and DeVine to facilitate a Project ECHO telehealth weekly teaching program centered on opioid prescribing and addiction topics, now in its fourth year. Their passion for this field led them to pursue additional board certification in addiction medicine. Their work has led to recognition, most notably, the American Hospital Association Nova Award, the 2020 Minnesota Medical Association Presidents Award, and Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians 2021 Family Physicians of the Year.
